Superman was created in the 1930s by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, two teenagers from Cleveland, Ohio, whose personal experiences and pop-culture interests heavily influenced the character. The character was born out of a mix of personal tragedy, cultural identity, and a desire to create a “sensational” new type of hero during the Great Depression.
